Consisting chiefly of correspondence of the family of William C. Mitchell (1784-1880), of Leesville, S.C., and several of his children: John Andrew Jeter (1826-1903), Mary A.L. (1829-1913), Harriet S.W. (1832-1925), and Elizabeth Georgianna (1835-1854). Also includes letters from Alabama written by children of William C. Mitchell by another marriage. Bulk of correspondence relates to the schooling of W.C. Mitchell's daughters at Cokesbury, S.C., Salem, N.C., and South Carolina Female Collegiate Institute at Barhamville. Includes letters from John Mitchell while he was examining land in Florida, 1850, and letter, 19 May 1851, from cousin Andrew Lee prospecting for gold in California; earliest items are German language letters.
